The Architectural Conservation/Historic Design Review Board reviews proposed exterior alterations and construction for structures within the city's five designated historic districts or individually designated as being historically significant. The board evaluates proposals and issues certificates of appropriateness that allow a project to commence.

The Historic and Architectural Preservation Commission is charged with protecting and enhancing structures, sites and areas that are reminders of past eras, events, and persons important in local, state, or national history.
